An idea for a book begins an ambitious and fantastic destiny. Six exceptional writers
speak about the moment when the urge became strong and they couldn’t escape
their inspiration.
They’ll also provide an insider’s feel for their writing style by reading
a piece from their recent work - featuring Scott Bainbridge (The Heist), Claire
Baylis (Dice), Charity Norman (Home Truths), essa may ranapiri (Echidna), Tina
Shaw (A House Built on Sand) and Tracey Slaughter (The Girls in the Red
House Are Singing).
Scott Bainbridge
Waikato based true-crime author Scott Bainbridge wrote Without Trace and Still Missing,
which inspired the TVNZ series The Missing. The Fix was shortlisted for the 2023 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Non-Fiction crime writing. The Heist is his tenth book.
Claire Baylis’s debut novel, Dice won the 2024 Ngaio Marsh Best First Novel Award and was a finalist for the Australian Ned Kelly International Crime Novel Award. Her fiction has appeared in Sport, Landfall, Turbine | Kapohau, Takahē and on RNZ.
Charity Norman
Former barrister Charity Norman is the author of Home Truths, her eighth novel. She won a Ngaio Marsh award for Remember Me and has also been shortlisted for best International Crime Fiction in the Australian Ned Kelly Awards.

ECHIDNA is the second book from poet essa may ranapiri (Ngaati Raukawa, Te Arawa, Ngaati Puukeko, Takataapui, Clan Gunn) who’s work has been longlisted for the Ockham NZ Book Awards and received the Janet Frame Poetry Award 2023 and the inaugural Keri Hulme Award.
Tina Shaw
Tina Shaw’s A House Built on Sand won the 2023 Michael Gifkins Prize for unpublished manuscript. Her awards include the CNZ Berlin Writers Residency, the University of Waikato Writer-In-Residence, the Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship and a Storylines Tessa Duder Award.
Tracey Slaughter
Tracey Slaughter's latest poetry collection is The Girls in the Red House are Singing (2024). Her numerous international awards for fiction and poetry include the 2024 Moth Short Story Prize, the 2024 ABR Calibre Essay Prize, and the Manchester Poetry Prize 2023.
